Munchen Palace hotel

I have two great hotel recs, and I have personally stayed at both. This review is based on our stay in suites at both hotels: Hotel Torbrau and Hotel Munchen Palace. We loved both for different reasons.

I researched hotels for hours and these were the best I found in terms of location, room size, value, food, and great reviews.

Hotel Torbrau

Hotel Torbrau is a small hotel in the charming old town, so it’s easily within walking distance to Marienplatz, Hofbraeuhaus, and other must do’s in Munich.

Being smackdab in the heart of the city, we were able to step right outside our hotel and walk to all the action downtown. Or just people-watch from above with our beautiful city view!

Our suite was huge, with a separate sitting area, large fancy bathroom, and master bedroom separated by sliding doors. Our room was surprisingly luxurious and not at all tacky. The decor was much nicer than what I had originally thought when I booked it. The pictures online don’t quite do it justice.

Ahh, we’re in Germany, enjoying our “suite” views!

All that space was nice with the kiddos after being cramped on a plane for 12 hours. Despite being near the Old Town, it was still quiet. I think that’s typical for Germany, no? I got a bit of shut-eye to help with the jet lag. Oh and a few cold sips from the free mini bar didn’t hurt either.

The cute German bakeries and eateries right outside our window were so inviting, but we never had the opportunity to try them because the hotel’s breakfast was so good. You’ll be energized for a day of sight-seeing (as long as the champagne and pastries don’t put you in a carb coma). Don’t worry, they have plenty of protein options as well.

The staff was so friendly and generous. They squeezed us in for breakfast even though they were near closing. The waitress gave us muffins and snacks to take with us after we had already stuffed our faces. They were so sweet (the staff, well, and the muffins).

They were English-speaking, but of course my husband and I (well, more he than I) wanted to put our Deutsch to work. We loved speaking German with the concierge as he took the time to show us the city map. I know, such tourists.

Baby-Related Items:

The hotel suite came with a stocked, mini fridge with complimentary juices and adult beverages, with space left to store milk.

Hotel Torbrau’s crib was safe, comfortable and roomy. It’s always a toss up how well our larger-than-average babies and toddlers are going to fit in the hotel-provided cribs. This one was perfect. Reserve it in advance, just in case.

We hope to return here when we visit the Christmas markets later this year. What an ideal location with only a 7-minute walk to the main market in Marienplatz.

Hotel Munchen Palace

Hotel Munchen Palace is further out in the city, but walking distance to English Garden. They also had free bikes available to quickly get anywhere in the city.

The suite was beautiful with extra space for the kiddos, although not quite as roomy as the other hotel suite.

Plenty of space for hotel dancing!

Room service was pricey but delish. The burger was our fave. The restaurant did not disappoint either when we celebrated our last night. What a fun night we had! The room was practically all to ourselves!

Put your breakfast menu on the door the night before to avoid hangry kiddos in the morning. You don’t have to order the continental. (And you’ll want to save a buck anyway after getting the valet parking bill). Just get a la carte items (we got the omelet with everything), and they brought breads and yummy sides. We were stuffed.

The staff here was also super friendly and helpful. The concierge recommended this beautiful run through the English Garden and to check out the river surfers on the way – I loved it. You could walk there also. A run might tap the energy that you need to travel with kids.

Just kiddie corner to the hotel is the gourmet market Kafer. Our to-go sandwiches were yummy, but don’t just stop at the sandwich counter by the door – explore the whole store. My mom and I could have wandered around the cute little market for hours.

Baby-Related Items:

Munchen Palace also had a stocked, free mini fridge with juices and adult beverages, and space to store milk once I took out all the mini alcohol bottles.

Munchen Palace had a bit smaller crib, but provided cute little baby toiletries and animal puppet washcloths. The kids love them even back at home. Nice touch.

The baby soaps smelled so good, I used them myself. Hehe.

Hotel Munchen Palace lends bikes with baby/toddler bike seats for free. They don’t take reservations so head down there early. Our kids fit great in the carrier seats at 10 months and almost four years old.

Quick safety tip: These bikes are awkward to maneuver with a child on the back. We got ourselves into a couple precarious situations. Keep both hands on the handlebars at all times! The weight of the child seats really pulls and can make the bike start to collapse. Friendly locals saved our butts a few times. Literally.

We saw the best of Munich on bike in half a day!

COVID Tips:
Both hotels reinforced masks and hand hygiene when we visited in 2021. I don’t know the latest as the pandemic is moving forward. At the time there was a COVID testing center about 10 minutes walking distance from Munchen Palace. It was free for a reservation same-day, although you don’t have to have one. We received results in minutes via email. Whew- negative.

The company, MyCoronaCheck has other testing sites in the city.

The app Re-Open EU has up to date, clear and accurate information regarding COVID restrictions for EU countries. I found it very helpful. Check it daily for changes.

Take a look at these hotels for yourself and let me know if you have any questions! Happy to help.

Don’t forget to brush up on some basic German (and Bavarian German). While most people will speak English, they will appreciate you trying, you’ll get more in return, and it’s so much more fun to really dive into the German culture.

Prost!
