Is your little one outgrowing their giant convertible car seat? It may feel bittersweet, but here’s the bright side: travel is about to get a lot easier. A good travel booster seat packs into a carry-on, rides easily in rental cars and rideshares, and means you’re not gambling on whatever seat the rental counter hands you. These are my vetted best travel booster car seats of 2026: portable, foldable and inflatable, plus exactly when your child can use them.

When Can Your Child Use a Booster Car Seat?

Now, let’s answer the number one question we’re all asking (well, most of us)…

When can my child use a booster seat?”

– every new mother

Here’s the short answer, based on NHTSA guidance:

  • Ages 4 to 7: Keep your child in a forward-facing harness seat until they reach the top height or weight limit for that seat. Once they outgrow it, move to a booster.
  • Ages 8 to 12: Keep your child in a booster until the adult seat belt fits properly.
  • Back seat: Kids should ride in the back seat until age 13.

Typical readiness checklist for a booster:

  • Age 4 or older, and mature enough to sit upright for the whole ride without slumping or unbuckling
  • At least 40 pounds for most belt-positioning boosters (check your specific seat’s minimum)
  • Has outgrown the harness limits on their current seat

The 5-Step Test: when can your child stop using a booster?

  1. Can they sit with their back flat against the vehicle seat?
  2. Do their knees bend naturally at the edge of the seat?
  3. Does the shoulder belt cross the center of the shoulder and chest, not the neck or face?
  4. Does the lap belt sit low across the upper thighs, not the stomach?
  5. Can they stay seated this way for the whole trip?

If the answer to any of these is no, they still need the booster.

Booster laws and recommendations vary by state and country, so check your local requirements. This is general information, not a personal recommendation for your child.

Best Foldable Travel Booster Seat – WAYB Pico

If you’d rather go with the original folding travel seat, WAYB is the way to go. It folds down small enough for travel and works for kids who aren’t quite ready for a booster, since it has a harnessed mode.

Good for: Flights and international trips

Pros: Compact, travel-focused design, converts as your child grows

Cons: Premium price

Best Everyday High-Back Boosters That Convert for Travel

There are high back boosters like the Cosco Finale DX 2 in 1 Booster which was our every day booster until our son was big enough without the high back version. The seat is a bit hard but our son was never bothered by it.

We also have a high back Graco booster for every day home use now that our oldest is big enough. It converts to be able to remove the high back part and just bring the bottom of the seat for travel.

Best Backless Travel Booster Car Seats

Or Graco makes the booster without the high back for less than $30! These are great if you can’t lug around the high-back and if there is a seat/head rest that comes up high enough in the car.

The Chicco GoFit is another great travel booster, with it’s carrying handle and light weight. However, it doesn’t shrink down obviously like the inflatable booster.

Best Inflatable Travel Booster Car Seat

We have the UberBoost Inflatable booster from Hiccapop and have been loving it. We took it to Costa Rica (some car rental companies, you don’t know what kind of seat they will give you or how safe it is). Relying on our own seat took the stress out of planning.

It deflates and packs down pretty small, definitely small enough to shove into a carry-on.

It is grippy on the bottom so it is non-slip.

The Hiccapop UberBoost

  • It deflates and packs small enough for a carry-on
  • The grippy bottom keeps it from sliding
  • It’s listed as meeting U.S. federal car seat safety standards

Heads up: Booster rules differ abroad, and inflatable seats may not meet every country’s standards. Check local regulations before an international trip. Also, backless boosters need a vehicle seat or headrest that supports your child’s head, so check the car.

High Back Transition to Backless Booster

I personally love the Graco that has two modes. We are currently using the high back booster at home and will take off the back to bring just the backless booster when traveling (as long as the rental car has a high enough backseat/headrest).

We have the Graco and it’s great. The price is right, also.

Chicco, one of the highest quality brands, has an even nicer one if you’d rather.

How to Choose a Travel Booster Seat

Fit: Always do the 5-step test in the actual vehicle

Packing priority: Inflatable or folding for carry-ons, backless for lighter weight

Support needs: High-back if your child naps in the car or the vehicle has low seat backs

Where you’re traveling: Check local car seat laws abroad

Booster Seat FAQs

Can you use a booster seat on an airplane?
Generally no. Most booster seats are not approved for use in flight and aren’t designed for lap-belt-only airplane seats. You can usually gate-check or carry them on and use them at your destination. FAA-approved harnessed seats are a different category. [Confirm current FAA guidance.]

Should I bring a booster seat or rent one?
Bringing your own means you know the quality, fit, and cleanliness. Renting saves luggage space, but you can’t always guarantee the seat type. Read my guide on the pros and cons of each.

Can my child use a booster seat in an Uber or taxi?
Rules vary by city and state. Some rideshare services have limited car seat options, so a lightweight travel booster is the easiest solution.

What’s the lightest travel booster seat?
Inflatable and foldable seats are the lightest and most compact.

Are inflatable booster seats safe?
Check that the specific seat meets the safety standards in the country where you’re riding, and use it only within its stated age, weight, and height limits.
