Did you know you can surf in Munich? Yes, the city-nowhere-near-an-ocean-Munich.
River surfing, that is. And these guys (and girls, yeah!!) are no joke.
When I visited the city for the first time, I was so impressed by these surfers. It looked so fun, I wanted to try it myself. When in Rome right?
Being the adventure-seeker that I am, I asked around to see if there were any rental companies. This boy (and when I say boy, he was probably early 20’s) was filming a documentary on it, so I asked him if there were any rental companies.
He said there was no such thing. So either my German was terrible, his German was terrible, he didn’t know any better, or he took one look at me and thought, “don’t kid yourself ole’ lady.”
As I wrote about things to do in Munich, I decided to do some investigating. And yep – that kid (and a couple others that I asked) was so wrong. He should do his homework if he really is doing a documentary on surfing.
SantoLoco rents boards and wetsuits for about 40 Euro a day.
One of the best places (and most difficult-looking from the newbie eye) is on the Eisbach river at Prinzregentenstr 1, which near the English Garden.
From what I saw in the little time I was there, there are different sections of varying difficulty. Make sure you read the ins and outs of surfing in Munich, especially if you are a newbie.
Someday I’ll have to go back to Munich since I left this on the table.
If you make it, let me know how it goes!
Oh, and be sure to sport a helmet – some of those ledges looked crazy.
