We’ve traveled half-way across the world twice in three years to visit Zermatt – that’s how much you’ll love it. It’s only been two months since we returned, and we are already craving more delicious food from the cute Swiss town.
Zermatt’s car-free, quaint streets are lined with cozy and inviting cafes and restaurants. Visitors can’t help but live the true European life here. Slow down, sit outside and people-watch, or better yet – ‘Matterhorn-watch’ – as you sip a glass of white wine and enjoy a deliciously prepared meal. If it’s too cold outside, the cozy interiors are even more inviting.
Or…if you have excited little kids, consider getting food to-go to enjoy back at an apartment or hotel suite. It will taste just as good, you’ll save money on drinks, and it will be a bit more relaxing.
We’ve done this a few times from the then-named Factory at Unique Hotel Post. The pasta dishes are outstanding – nothing we could ever replicate at home. We devoured their traditional carbonara and lasagna, with leftovers to fight over the next day. And I don’t even like carbonara pasta, until now!
Unfortunately, the name and menu have recently changed since we left there in September 2021. It is now called Vivanda. But I would not hesitate to eat there again despite the changes. Their kitchen is consistently fast preparing dishes that are bound to impress. I’d love to go back some day and dine-in to enjoy the casually romantic ambiance.
Hotel Post actually houses another one of our favorites – the Brown Cow. This rustic, cozy pub has consistently exceeded our expectations with yummy burgers, fries and chicken nuggets. Their ample selection of beers is bound to satisfy whatever style you crave, including IPA’s! Those aren’t easy to find in Europe.
If it’s pizza you crave, there are several options that will leave you satisfied: North Wall, Casa Mia, Vivanda, and Grampi’s.
When you venture out for some hiking (and why wouldn’t you?!), be on the lookout for a traditional hutte, specifically Ze Seewjinu. We stumbled upon this ‘oasis in the desert’ on the Five Lakes (5-Seeweg) trail, near Grunsee. There’s no better place to enjoy downable beer, phenomenal lasagna, Matterhorn views, and good company with fellow hikers, all from the middle of the Swiss wilderness.
If you can afford a bit more (for what seems to be more than worth it), head to Restaurant Chez Vrony. We didn’t brave the romantic Michelin-star eatery with the two little ones, but it’s definitely on my bucket list for our future third visit to Zermatt. To get there, take the Sunnegga Funicular from Zermatt center up the mountain. From Sunnegga station, walk about 20 minutes down the hill to the town Findeln. Enjoy!
For a sweet pick-me-up after a long day of hiking, you’ll find yourself drooling in the windows of Backerei Fuchs as you try to decide in what to indulge yourself. I can never pass up a quiche Lorraine, and this one did not disappoint. Have the kids try apple strudel or a Matterhornli – a darling, hand-made chocolate Matterhorn.
All of the local workers we came across in Zermatt, especially at the Hotel Post restaurants, were friendly, welcoming, and down to Earth. They always treated me like a local with outstanding service, despite my annoyingly paying with credit card.
I do recommend carrying cash and coins with you in Switzerland, especially when the total bill is small. Be sure to read what you should know before visiting Zermatt for more tips.
There are two markets (COOP Supermarket and Denner) right by the main train station. Their locations are great for picking up some staple items, drinks and snacks. They have everything you need, from baby items to yummy pastries to adult refreshments. Stock up and save a franc!
